Pandemic Game Review

A few months ago (I’m behind, I know!) I had the opportunity to play Pandemic for the first time and I really loved it!  Pandemic is a board game that I’ve been dying to play but my board game friends had been reluctant to break it out because it’s challenging to win and they hadn’t ever done it.  Luckily, they decided to give it one last shot and it was worth it because we kicked that diseases butt!  Pandemic is pretty timely considering the ebola outbreak.  The object of the game is to cure a rapidly spreading disease while traveling around the globe before every major city is infected.  You use cubes to signify the disease and if a city with three cubes gets hit, it’s called an outbreak and the disease spreads to each of the surrounding cities.  Once the disease is cured in a research center the disease cubes that are already there remain until you clear them, but no new cities may be infected.  I think one of the reasons we were able to win is because my role was that of the scientist.  The scientist is able to cure a disease by getting four cards of the same color instead of five.  (Also just noting that I love that the scientist card depicts a female).  Andrew, Carolyn and I had a wonderful time playing this game and I definitely recommend it if you like feeling slightly panicked while strategizing!

  1. I’m not gonna lie: this isn’t my type of board game. I’ve played once or twice, and I think that the reason I don’t like it very much is that I’m rather competitive. So games where you work together aren’t super fun for me. But to each their own.

Love this game! Though it seems to be easier playing with three people vs. four. We’ve died for all except one game whenever we play with four people haha!

  3. I’ve been so curious about this game, and I’ve only heard good things. I’m definitely going to have to check it out.

oh wow, this looks really neat! I’m going to have to check this out, since I am lucky enough to have a pretty adventurous group of boardgame friends.

My housemate has this! It got brought into our board game rotation pretty quick, although it did take us a while to work out how to play it. I love the extra challenge modes too!

  6. I love Pandemic, but we can not win. Seriously, we always think that we’re doing good and we finally have it. Then we crash and burn. So fun though!
