2015 Oscars: The Best of the Best Dressed

The best part of the Oscars is watching the red carpet and seeing all of the gorgeous fashions the stars choose to wear and how they accessorize (and then putting my fashion degree to good use and writing about them the next day).  I’m happy when my favorite films, actors and actresses win awards but for the most part I don’t agree with the choices that are usually made.  I like films more than film awards.  But, I digress!  The majority of stars these days choose to wear “safe” dresses, usually opting for neutral colors in classic cuts for fear of ending up on a worst dressed list.  While all the dresses are really pretty, I do miss the days of riskier choices.  Here are my top 11 picks from last night!

1 - Jamie Chung

Jamie Chung – Yanina Couture

I absolutely adore the sunburst style sequins on this gown.  The most prominent firework design outlines Jamie’s body perfectly and creates a very stylized center which draws the eye to the place where light and dark overlap.  The layers of chiffon on the lower portion of the dress add a very ethereal look.

4 - Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon – Tom Ford

Reese Witherspoon is always on my best dressed lists but this Tom Ford dress blew me away.  It’s a classic black and white combination and the black off the shoulder neckline perfectly compliments that black waistline.  I love that Reese opted to wear sparkly button earrings and a bracelet while leave her neck bare which allows the dress to be the focal point of her look.

Gwyneth Paltrow – Ralph & Russo Couture

Gwyneth’s dress is one of my favorites of the evening.  I love that she took more of a risk than other attendees, opting to wear a one-sleeved gown with a beautiful chiffon rose as the shoulder.  Part of the reason it works so well is because of the neutral blush color of the fabric.  The dress is a mermaid cut which does not work on most body types, but on Gwenyth it accentuates all the right places.  Lastly, her teardrop statement earrings are to die for!

Anna Farris – Zuhair Murad

Anna Farris’s silver strapless dress is a thing of beauty.  I love all of the sequins and I especially love the extra sparkle on the waistline.  It looks like there are larger pailette sequins as well as pearl adornments.  Because there’s so much going on in her gown, Anna made the right choice in opting to accessorize with a neutral grey clutch.

2 - Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick – Thakoon

I love the peachy color of Anna Kendrick’s Thakoon dress!  The neckline looks gorgeous on her and acts as it’s own accessory because there’s no need to add a necklace.  The front cutout shows just enough skin without being vulgar and is mirrored by the panel of fabric which spans from the dresses waistband to the floor.

3 - Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana – Atelier Versace

I’m not usually a fan of spaghetti strap dresses but Zoe Saldana really makes this one work.  The criss crossed fabric in the midsection adds a ruche effect which is very flattering.  She also wears a beautiful statement necklace that adds a bit of sparkle to the look.

7 - Scarlet Johansson

Scarlet Johansson – Versace

Scarlet Johansson is making my list primarily for the jade color and the perfect fit of her gown.  This Versace dress is a very classic cut with a deep v-neckline and haltered top.  The subtle darker fabrics lying right below her chest and  on her hipline add a very appealing contour.  I do not love Scarlet’s necklace and it’s a bit much which takes away from the simplicity of the dress but it’s not terrible enough to take her off my list.

6 - JLo

Jennifer Lopez – Elie Saab

Jennifer Lopez’s Elie Saab gowns makes her appear as though she’s just stepped out of a fairytale and onto the red carpet.  The nude shade of her dress looks phenomenal against her tanned skin, and the plunging neckline it met with a simple belt in a matching shade of nude.  I love how the embellishments are concentrated in the center of her gown and stop about halfway down her leg.

8 - Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson – Romona Keveza

Jennifer Hudson’s pastel yellow strapless gown is the perfect choice.  It looks beautiful paired with her slim gold belt and I love that she accessorized with an emerald statement ring which adds a nice pop of color.  The dress hugs her curves and the extra flap of asymmetrical fabric in the midsection  adds a more stylized touch.

9 - Emma Stone

Emma Stone – Elie Saab

Emma Stone’s Elie Saab gown is reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour.  The sheer fabric on the sleeves is offset by the gold sequin pattern.  The sexy slit up the leg of the dress stops at Emma’s upper thigh and her matching satin mary jane peep toe heels severely elongate her leg and accentuate her thin frame.

10 - Oprah Winfrey

Oprah – Vera Wang

Oprah also opted for a nude colored gown which boasts a beautiful chiffon overlay. The overlay is criss crossed at the center which adds a slimming diamond effect to the center of the gown and is belted in the midsection.  The sleeves are the same material as the overlay and Oprah accessorizes with statement earrings and a really pretty knotted diamond bracelet.

Benhati Prinsloo – Armani Prive

This Armani Prive gown is my favorite dress from the night.  It’s a strapless fitted number with the top bodice resembling a corset but it drops outward just past the waistline.  The ruffled midsection is met with the same material fitted perfectly to Benhati’s body and an added later of black netting adds to the lower half of the gown.  The bright red embellishments contrast beautifully against the black background and her red lips and black jewelry complete this chic look.

Kiera Knightley – Valentino

I kept feeling torn about whether or not to include Kiera Knightley but the more I examine her gown, the more I love it.  While I’m not too into the black cursive words sewn onto the lower chiffon layer, I do love the embroidered flowers.  Kiera looks like a woodland fairy who just stepped out of an enchanted forest.  The flowing bottom half of her gown was designed to hide her baby bump and it absolutely accomplishes that task.  Kiera is the only female I saw wearing a headband and it perfectly fits the feel of her look.
