Things That Made Me Smile: January Edition

I’ve decided to start a new series of posts (yes, a consistent once-a-month-post here, hooray!) outlining the things that made me smile throughout the month. I’m going to try to stick to five each post, but no promises- I can’t help my big ‘ole heart!

1) Establishing a New Routine – I made a decision to reinstate a morning routine for myself beginning on January 2nd (we were off of work on January 1st!) and I spent all of January sticking to it and tweaking it until I figured out what works best for me.  I wake up between 5-5:30 on weekday mornings, begin the day with Yoga With Adrienne (it helped that she was doing a 30 day yoga challenge in January), then spend the rest of my free time editing videos, showering, reading, bullet journaling, etc.  It’s been an absolute pleasure to have my mornings back and I already feel like I’ve accomplished something before leaving to begin the workday.  The one major tweak I made is that Friday is my wildcard day.  Since it’s the end of the week I might be overtired from nights out or work stress so I wake up whenever I feel like it and spend the morning doing whatever I’m in the mood for! Another minor tweak is that my wake up time 5:02 or 5:32 depends on whether I made it to bed by 10:30 or not! (and regular exercise has made made feel less guilty about all of the dessert dates I go on!)

2) Broadway – Andrew and I really dove deep into Broadway this month- something I’ve been wanting to do after a major lack of seeing shows last year (in 2018 we only made it to Mean Girls and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child… twice). We kicked off the first week of the year by seeing Daniel Ratcliffe in Lifespan of a Fact at Studio 54 (a theater I’ve never been to and was able to cross off my list!), then we went to see My Fair Lady at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (another new to me theater), and finally Anastasia at the Broadhurst Theater (a repeat visit for me!).  Of the three, My Fair Lady is my clear favorite from the music to the set design to the acting. I loved every minute of it!  We have a few more shows planned in February and March and I’m pretty excited about it!

3) Book Events – Book events are always a highlight for me but January was such an overwhelmingly wonderful month with three very special events three weeks in a row.  First and foremost, I got to moderate Roshani Chokshi’s launch event for The Gilded Wolves and have a conversation with her, S.A. Chakraborty and Melissa Albert at the Barnes & Noble on the UES.  You can read more about that here (how crazy that this sporadic blogger can link to another post from this year!).  I had joked that I was in for disappointment after such an amazing kickoff to my bookish event year but the following week I saw Queen Holly Black at The Strand (having dinner beforehand at Saigon Market with Alexa and Lili) to celebrate Prince Cardan and The Wicked King<333  Then the following week I went to my first ever Leigh Bardugo event- I had always been too intimidated by the crowd she gathers to attend when I would be dreading my commute home (having another amazing dinner at Saigon Market with Alexa, Rachel and DJ).  And you’ll just have to wait until my February post to find out why the following event was another heartfelt win for me (unless you already saw on my instagram!).

4) My 2019 Book Spreadsheet & Bullet Journal – It’s no secret that I live for spreadsheets.  Things that normal people would never even consider making a spreadsheet for, I most definitely have a spreadsheet for.  Every year I look forward to starting my Year in Books spreadsheet (template courtesy of Crini) but this year I feel I’ve been utilizing it to the fullest and it’s the first thing I look forward to updating every morning after my bullet journal.  I made a video of my 2019 Bullet Journal setup if you’re interested and I may post some screenshots on the blog at some point in the future.  Another big spreadsheet moment for me this month happened in my Pokemon Go group chat where Andrew, Kelly, Matt and I discuss trading when someone suggested we should have a spreadsheet. I promptly shared my very in depth and color coded Pokemon go spreadsheet that details my Pokedex, the shinies I’ve caught, my progress on badge updates and notes for availability of certain Pokemon.  I think everyone was equal parts impressed and wondering why I’m so crazy!

5) Reading (of course) – Reading is a very easy go to each month as a favorite of mine, but this January was particularly special.  I somehow managed to read 15 books.  Which is a HUGE deal to me! I devoted so much time to reading instead of wasting time on social media, I read outside my comfort zone which kept me engaged, and I truly followed my mood reading heart, setting aside the things I felt like I *had* to read for the things I wanted to read.  My favorites of the month included The Paris Seamstress by Natasha Leester, The Penderwicks at Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall, and A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer.
