Old School YA + The Vampire Diaries

Recently I think I’ve been regressing back to my early days, and while it may have something to do with nostalgia and wanting to recapture old feelings, I can’t deny my heart.  I’ve been really enjoying paranormal YA fiction (thanks JLA!) and I’ve had the urge to revisit some older series.  Some series on the top of my list are 1) Vampire Academy – I read books 1-3 but never continued with books 4-6 and I want to fix that. I’ll likely re-read the first three before diving in, 2) Beautiful Creatures – I’m one of few who LOVED the film adaptation (actually, same for Vampire Academy!), but I’ve never read the source material and I am curious, and 3) despite my lukewarm feelings towards the first book, I do think I want to continue reading Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series.  I know she’s penning a new novel set in the same world called The Iron Raven, and judging by how much I love her Shadow of the Fox series, I’m thinking I won’t want to miss her next book. Which means lots of catch up!

I recently read The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh which was promised to be the return of vampires to YA fiction, but sadly, was not.  While I enjoyed the book, it was definitely historical fiction and the mention of vampires didn’t come until much later in the novel.  It’s this disappointment that also has me craving the vampires of old!

On a separate but semi-related note, I started watching The Vampire Diaries and I cannot even express how obsessed I am with this show.  I’m currently watching season two and every night I look forward to going home and watching more.  Andrew has watched some with me as well and we both agree that part of the draw is that it’s very light on the high school drama, instead focusing on the vampire and town founders plot lines, which are way more interesting.  As of this moment, it’s very hard for me to be team Damon, though I do have a very strong soft spot for him.  I love the faces he makes and he’s 100% a tsundere.  He’s already gradually softened, but I can feel that there’s so much more him.  Every time he cracks the slightest bit, I feel immense satisfaction.  I do really love Stefan but knowing how many Dalena shippers are out there, I’m holding off on my shipping allegiance until I get further into the series.

Highly endorse finishing the Vampire Academy books. It’s probably one of my favorite series. And I also loved the movie!

I think I stopped watching Vampire Diaries around season 4. It was getting too repetitive for me, haha.

Oooh that’s high praise! I really loved the Vampire Academy movie and recently I’ve heard so many people talk about how bad it was and I’m just like what? Did we watch the same thing? lol. I have heard the later seasons of TVD aren’t the best, so we’ll see how far I make it. At the moment, I’m SO invested!

I am truly enjoying your binge watch of The Vampire Diaries! It’s honestly such a fun show, and hearing you talk about it has me contemplating a rewatch of my favorite episodes.

And yay for wanting to read old school YA! Vampire Academy is so fun, and I want to know what you think of 4-6. And I’m tempted to read the rest of the Iron Fey because of Rachel and because of those beautiful new covers they’re getting that I want to acquire! And I’m excited to reread Beautiful Creatures with all of you.

Anyway, all this to say – love the post! <3

Yes! I cannot wait to read Beautiful Creatures together soon! And I’m also really looking forward to finishing Vampire Academy. We should add the rest of Iron Fey to our buddy read list!

I love the Vampire Diares show and the Orinigals. I watched them for the first time a few years ago and got thru almost all VD in 2 weeks. I couldnt stop! I wish the books were as good! Enjoy your journey into Vanpires. :)

  4. Oh I am so excited for you to watch The Vampire Diaries for the first time. I LOVE the show, it’s SO well done and I agree, I love the founder’s plot line and it feels way darker/more authentic than a lot of teen paranormal shows. I made my husband watch it with me last year during my rewatch and he was 100% team Stefan and I was Team Damon so there was some rivalry in our household lol :)
