PNBC: Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

The Paranormal Book Club is the brain child of Alexa from Alexa Loves Books, DJ from Life in Fiction, Rachel from Hello Chelly and myself! We started it back in 2019 and decided to start commemorating our book club picks in blog posts.

Our first book of 2020 was Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  Here are my thoughts!

What were your initial thoughts about the book? Were you excited to read it?

I was so excited to read Beautiful Creatures! It’s one of those books that I’ve wanted to read for ages but just never got around to.  I picked up a very inexpensive paperback copy from The Strand during an outing with the rest of the Paranormal Book Club and suggested we read it as our first pick in 2020.  I had previously seen the film (and loved it), but I remembered next to nothing going into the book.  Upon starting it, I was surprised at how quickly I fell into the world and how well the story held up.

What was your favorite quote or passage, and why did it resonate with you?

There were two lines from Beautiful Creatures that really resonated with me, the first being, “The right thing and the easy thing are never the same.” And the second being, “Darkness, real darkness, was more than just a lack of light.”  The first resonates with me because it’s so true to life.  There are many times when not doing the right thing would be really easy, but that’s when it’s most important to think about who you want to be and do the right thing.  The second quote, I mostly just appreciated the distinction about the different types of darkness in the world.

Which character did you relate to the most, and what was it about them that you connected with?

I’m probably going to be the only one to answer this way, but I think I related to Uncle Macon the most! He’s just an introverted homebody who wants to left alone in his mansion with his magic.  He doesn’t care what other people think of him and he truly puts family above all else.

Was there anything you wanted to see more of in the book, like more page time for a secondary character or a plot point you wish was explored more?

I think all of the secondary characters were very well developed and none of them felt like plot devices to me.  Though, I am really pleased to know there’s a spin-off duology about Ridley because she is something else!

What are your final thoughts? Would you read this book again and/or continue with the series? Would you read another book written by the same author?

I ended up really enjoying Beautiful Creatures, much more than I initially expected to.  In addition to the fascinating lore of the town and the families, I also loved the illustrations in the ebook version, as well as the recipes at the end! I’m definitely going to be baking Amma’s Cookie Pie in the future.  I am most definitely planning on continuing with the series (I already have a copy of Beautiful Darkness to start) and I want to read the Ridley series as well!

Overall, this was an excellent start to the Paranormal Book Club year for me and I’m looking forward to reading more with my best friends! Don’t forget to check out their posts:

I LOVE the quotes you chose, especially the darkness one! Also, I love, love, love that you related to Uncle Macon. :D

  2. I remember rather enjoying this book! I also watched the movie… but I think I fell asleep. I am fairly confident I borrowed it from my aunt when I had the flu and was so exhausted that I couldn’t keep my eyes open. Yikes! I will have to give the movie another go.

I’m truly happy that our first 2020 PNBC read was a success for most of us (I still feel terribly that DJ couldn’t finish the book)! I definitely want to read the rest of the series, so fingers crossed that happens before the year ends.
